Melatonin and Circadian Rhythm After THC: Repairing the Sleep Clock

Chronic THC use disrupts the circadian clock. Cessation requires both REM rebound management and circadian rhythm repair. They are different problems requiring different tools.

Cannabis cessation produces two distinct sleep problems that are often conflated: REM rebound (the brain catching up on suppressed REM sleep) and circadian disruption (the sleep-wake schedule becoming unstable). The GREEN protocol addresses both, and the tools are different.

How THC Disrupts the Circadian Clock

The endocannabinoid system directly modulates the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN)-the brain's master circadian clock. CB1 receptors in the SCN influence the timing of melatonin secretion, cortisol rhythms, and core body temperature cycles.

Chronic THC use:

  • Shifts melatonin secretion timing
  • Blunts the cortisol awakening response (the normal morning cortisol spike that promotes alertness)
  • Reduces the amplitude of circadian rhythms-the peaks and valleys of the 24-hour biological cycle become flatter

Many daily cannabis users experience disrupted circadian patterns: difficulty waking in the morning, difficulty sleeping at night without cannabis, reduced alertness during the day, and "social jet lag" where their natural sleep-wake cycle is delayed relative to social demands.

The Two-Phase Recovery

Phase 1 (weeks 1-4): REM rebound The priority is managing the intense, vivid dream sleep that produces sleep fragmentation and distress. Tools: Magnesium L-Threonate and Apigenin (GABA-A support for sleep onset; mild reduction in REM rebound intensity through sleep architecture support).

Phase 2 (weeks 2-8): Circadian re-entrainment As REM rebound resolves, the circadian rhythm needs to be reset to a regular, appropriate schedule. Tools: Low-dose melatonin at consistent timing, morning light exposure, consistent wake time.

The Circadian Re-Entrainment Protocol

Consistent wake time: Wake at the same time every day, including weekends. This is the single most powerful circadian anchor. Do not vary wake time by more than 30 minutes.

Morning light exposure: 10-15 minutes of bright outdoor light within 30 minutes of waking. Light is the primary zeitgeber (time-giver) for the circadian clock. Natural light suppresses residual melatonin and activates cortisol through the retinohypothalamic tract.

Low-dose melatonin at consistent timing: 0.3mg at the same time each evening (1-2 hours before desired sleep time). Melatonin is a circadian signal, not primarily a sedative; at physiological dose and consistent timing, it reinforces the circadian signal.

Avoid light exposure at night: Blue light from screens in the 2 hours before bed suppresses melatonin secretion. Screen filters (Night Shift, Flux, Bluelight glasses) reduce but don't eliminate this effect.

Temperature: Core body temperature drops 1-2°C during sleep onset. A cool sleeping environment (65-68°F / 18-20°C) facilitates this temperature drop and sleep onset.

The Timeline

Most users find that circadian rhythms substantially stabilize by week 4-6 of consistent wake time and morning light exposure. The endocannabinoid system's regulation of the SCN gradually recovers, making the circadian anchoring behaviors less necessary-but many users maintain them permanently as a sleep quality improvement.
