Alcohol Withdrawal Can Be Medically Serious

For someone who has been drinking heavily for a long time, stopping suddenly is not just uncomfortable. It can be dangerous. Here is why, in plain terms.

Alcohol calms the brain by boosting a chemical messenger called GABA, which acts like the brain's brake pedal. When you drink heavily for weeks or months, your brain adapts by weakening that brake and stepping harder on the accelerator to stay balanced. If you then remove the alcohol quickly, the brake is still weak but the accelerator is still floored. The brain becomes overexcited. This is called GABA rebound, and it is what drives the racing heart, anxiety, tremors, and, in severe cases, seizures and a life-threatening condition called delirium tremens.

This is why withdrawal from heavy alcohol use is one of the few drug withdrawals that can be fatal without medical supervision. It is also why we ask you to involve a doctor if you fall into a higher-risk group. There is no shame in this. A supervised taper is a sign of doing recovery the smart way.

Who Should NOT Use Relapsd DRY Without Physician Guidance

Relapsd DRY is not a substitute for medically supervised detox. If any of the following describe you, please do not begin reducing or stopping alcohol on your own. Speak with a physician first so they can build a safe plan with you.

• Heavy daily drinkers, particularly those who drink every day to avoid feeling sick.
• Anyone with a history of withdrawal seizures or delirium tremens.
• Anyone consuming more than 8 drinks per day.
• Anyone who has been told by a clinician that they need supervised detox, or who has a serious co-occurring medical or psychiatric condition.
